Voegwoorden - Conjunctions

Een voegwoord (‘conjunction’) is een woord dat twee deelzinnen ('clauses') met elkaar verbindt. Het Engels kent veel woorden die zinnen aan elkaar kunnen rijgen:

 

Opsomming:

  • And’                 (En)                 Mike and Julia are family.

Reden/Oorzaak:

  • Because’        (Omdat)          She walked on because he was angry.
  • As’                    (Omdat)          He thinks he’s stupid as he didn’t know the answer.
  • For’                  (Want)             He’ll never make it for he’s too stupid.
  • Since’              (Aangezien)    I can’t help you since I don’t know how.

Gevolg:

  • So’                    (Dus)               I had other plans so I said no.
  • So that’                        (Zodat)            We saved money so that we could go on vacation.

Keuze:

  • Or’                     (Of)                 Should I stay or should I go?

Tegenstelling:

  • But’                   (Maar)             It was an ugly but smart boy.
  • Though’           (Desondanks) I see your point, though I don’t agree.
  • Although’        (Hoewel)         He laughed although he had lost.
  • Even though’ (Hoewel)         I agreed even though I didn’t like the idea.
